Effect on the nervous system:Valerian has a sedative effect, which can strengthen the inhibitory process of the cerebral cortex, reduce reflex excitability, and relieve smooth muscle spasm.
Antibacterial action: The total alkaloids derived from valerian have antibacterial effects, especially against Gram-positive bacteria. The two alkaloids separated from it, valerine and bristonine, also have effects, but the effectiveness is lower. It can be combined with bromine for various nerve excitation states.
Effects on circulation and respiration: Some components of valerian can reduce blood pressure in animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, mice), which is related to parasympathymimetic effect, blocking carotid sinus reflex and inhibiting the central nervous system.
Other effects: There are some antidiuretic effects. Intravenously injected in dogs, the infusion can accelerate the hemagglutination process in vivo, but has no effect in vitro. The extract can inhibit the isolated small intestine, while large doses have excitatory effects, which can be blocked by atropine. No effect on pituitary-adrenal system. Some components that relieve smooth muscle spasm can be isolated from the roots by column chromatography.
