About Gymnema sylvestre Schult
A perennial woody climbing dicotyledonous plant found on hillsides or shrubs in tropical and subtropical regions, most common in parts of central and southern India as well as southern China, tropical Africa, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, it is an anti-diabetic plant used in folk,
Ayurvedic and homeopathic medical systems. The main medicinal parts are the leaves and roots, which are generally believed to have: antiviral, diuretic, anti-allergic, analgesic and anti-rheumatic effects. It is used in Chinese medicine to treat abscesses, rheumatic joint pain, and poisonous snake bites. Today, it is commonly consumed in tablets, capsules, liquid extracts and dried leaves (boiled into tea with water).

The leaves contain 20 different saponins and glycosides. Most of the medical studies on the leaves focus on the effect of affecting blood sugar. A number of studies have shown that folic acid in the leaves may promote the regeneration of islet cells, and inhibit glucose absorption. Therefore, the leaf is also known as the sugar eliminator.
The ability to perceive sweetness in the mouth is thought to be one of many factors that affect food receptivity, so taste may play an important role in regulating appetite and energy intake, and may influence the formation of satiety. In one experiment, it was found that compared with those who did not take the extract, in addition to temporarily reducing the sense of sweetness, the desire for sweets was also reduced, and the intake of food was more likely to be restricted in the subsequent meal, because the folic acid in the leaf has the effect of blocking the sweet taste buds, and can temporarily suppress the perception of sweet taste.
