Safflower, Chinese medicine name. A dried flower Carthamus tinctorius L. of safflower for the Compositae. Summer flowers from yellow to red when picking. Cultivation is widespread throughout the China. It has the effect of activating blood circulation and clearing blood stasis and relieving pain. Used for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, lochia, swelling and pain.
Safflower extract can be easily dissolved in water and ethanol solution, but not in ether, petroleum ether, oil and acetone. It is an excellent coloring agent for starch, but slightly coloring for protein. Ferric ion can make it becomes black. It has good resistance to light and high temperature.
