Hawthorn, also known as Shanliguo, Shanlihong, is genus Crataegus in the Rosaceae, a deciduous tree that can reach 6 meters in height. The branches are densely grown, with fine spines, and the young branches are pilose; the small branches are purple-brown, and the old branches are gray-brown.

The core is hard, the flesh is thin, and the taste is slightly sour. The fruit can be eaten raw or made into preserved fruit cakes, and can be used as medicine after being dried. It is a unique tree species for both medicine and fruit in China.
